iPhone sales boost revenue for Vodafone

iPhone sales helped Vodafone to a £1 billion rise in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2009, the carrier has disclosed.

The surge in consumer demand for high-end mobiles over the pre-Christmas period saw total revenues for the period climb to £11.5 billion, prompting a leap in the telecommunications giant's share price.

Vittorio Colao of Vodafone attributed the company's performance to its growing smartphone portfolio, as well as its landmark deal to secure rights to sell the iPhone, and forecasted that operating profit for 2010 could rise as high as £11.8 billion.

Mr Colao also admitted that the network is considering selling the iPad when it arrives later this year and that he was "very interested" in being able to sell a device that "improves the customer experience with mobile data".

Vodafone will apparently have some stiff competition if it does bid to offer the iPad, as every other major UK network has also expressed a serious interest in Apple's tablet device.

Vodafone's link-up with Apple has given it the opportunity to sell iPhones in 14 nations worldwide.
