2010 will see the emergence of modestly priced mobile phones that will be blessed with more intelligent platforms and advanced interfaces than ever before, narrowing the gap between the high end and the low.

Conrad Longmore, who heads up mobile news website Mobile Gazette, said that this year a new influx of low-cost smartphones will result in "mid-market handsets becoming progressively smarter".

Although many are talking up Google's Android platform, Mr Longmore was more interested in the Symbian S60 and Bada operating systems, which would allow better value smartphones to emerge from Nokia and Samsung, countering the impact of the iPhone and the Nexus One at the top end of the scale.

According to statistics 17 per cent of all mobiles sold in 2009 fall into the smartphone category and further estimates suggest that up to one billion consumers could be using smartphones by 2013.

The obvious issue facing experts here is how exactly one defines a smartphone. Growth in all areas of the smartphone market are anticipated this year, with the fourth incarnation of Apple's iPhone likely to reinvigorate the public interest in the summer.
