App purchases coming to EU Palm Pre customers
Posted 6th January 2010 at 12:17pm by Matt Dixon
Although the Palm Pre can download and install apps from its online service, customers in the UK and around Europe have been limited to a selection of free apps, but Palm aims to change this in the next couple of months.
US users have already been given access to paid-for applications and a spokesperson for Palm indicated that they would be bringing the same service to the UK in March of this year.
The success of the US e-commerce model, which has spawned 600 premium applications, has been the main catalyst for the European version. This is despite the fact that the Palm Pixi, which is a cut-down webOS alternative to the Pre, has yet to get an official UK release date.
The spokesperson said that the new platform would allow developers to generate income and connect with customers quickly and simply, which some have interpreted as a criticism of the structure and strategies used by Apple in its App Store.
