After the unveiling of the Nexus One a few days ago, which was thought to be the first phone to receive version 2.1 of the Android OS, it emerged that additional Android smartphones could also benefit from the update in the future.

Sanjay Jha, Chief Executive of Motorola, said that he is of the understanding that the Motorola Droid could soon be getting the same OS via an upgrade.

Head of HTC Peter Chou also confirmed similar assumptions regarding the Droid Eris mobile.

To UK users, the names of these phones will mean little, but in fact the Motorola Droid is being sold as the Milestone over here and the Droid Eris from HTC is essentially a modified version of the Hero which has been designed for US network provider Verizon.

This means that any Android updates to these phones in the US could easily be transferred to the equivalent handsets on our shores.

Android 2.1 will add 3D graphics and acceleration to certain applications, an improved image viewing app, an updated user interface and many more improvements, although there are some concerns that the lack of the Nexus One's powerful processor could result in some features being cut out for the other smartphones.

    Steve, 15th January 2010.

@Billy Banks I've read Jan. 18th or Jan 22nd. It wouldn't surprise me if it showed up a bit later... but I am wondering the same thing. Looking forward to it regardless.
