The number of handsets utilising the Android mobile platform has been further bolstered with the release of the Samsung Galaxy Spica.

The Galaxy Spica is aimed at the mid to high end smartphone market and features a 3.2 inch touch sensitive display, a 3.2 megapixel camera and storage through the addition of a micro SD memory card.

Samsung is hoping that consumers will be attracted by the speed of the processor used by the new device, which runs at 800Mhz, much like the Samsung Jet.

It also expects that the native support for DivX video content, which is a first for an Android handset, will prove to be a popular asset with the Galaxy Spica.

A Samsung VP emphasised the speed and performance of the new handset and various other Samsung spokespeople have come out in support of the high quality interface and the level of application access inherent in the Galaxy Spica.

Samsung has joined the long line of mobile manufacturers to release Android handsets in the run up to 2010, joining HTC, Motorola, T-Mobile and Sony Ericsson.
