South Korea to close Android app market?
Posted 15th March 2010 by Matt Dixon
South Korean authorities are considering whether to keep the Android Market open after it was discovered that thousands of apps have not been sanctioned or checked by government regulators.
The Game Rating Board (GRB) discovered nearly four and a half thousand unlicensed apps on the Android Market.
Rather like the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), the GRD requires that any piece of software sold is first deemed fit through testing.
According to Yonhap News, a spokesperson for Google confirmed that the search firm's headquarters had received notification from the Korean authorities in writing and that Google was currently preparing a response.
The Android Market is relatively new to South Korea, having only launched in the last quarter of 2009.
This is more than a year after customers in the UK and USA got access to Android apps in this way.
