About Samsung

About Samsung

Samsung is currently the second largest mobile phone manufacturer in the UK and the number one prepay mobile phone manufacturer, with its products selling in their millions across the globe. Samsung handsets encompass both high-end and simpler to use models, with their success achieved thanks to their full functionality as well as the company’s commitment to advancing mobile phone technology.

The company has garnered particular praise for the music experience offered by its phones, which have included audio technology from Bang & Olufsen and ICEpower as well its own patented SmartBass system to give a rich and full mobile sonic experience far removed for tinny mobile phone sound.

Just as successful have been the company’s camera focussed phones, with high-grade cameras, with Samsung being the first company to launch an 8 megapixel camera phone in Europe. And not least because of its stunning collaboration with Armani, the fashion crowd have been just as keen to snap up Samsung mobile phones as the camera and music enthusiasts.

The quality of their handsets was born out by Samsung dominating the Mobile Choice Awards 2008, where it scooped the Best Manufacturer, Best Camera Phone and Best Music Phone titles.

History

History

Samsung was founded by Lee Byung-Chul in Seoul in 1938 as a small trading company with just 40 employees, before succumbing to the havoc wrought by the Communist invasion in 1950. Lee started again in 1951 in Suwon and from here the firm grew into a huge operation encompassing a sugar refinery, financial services and a department store. The seeds for the company we know today were sown in the 1970s when Lee launched a radio and television station known as Samsung Electronics.

Samsung is South Korea’s largest company and enjoys revenue in excess of the gross domestic product of countries such as Argentina. Its success has been such that in 2005, Samsung overtook Japanese rival Sony as the world's leading consumer electronics brand and became part of the top twenty global brands overall.

Samsung mobile phones are sold as part of pay as you go and pay monthly contracts with all major mobile phone networks and show no sign of losing popularity.
