Windows mobile phones in depth
Windows mobile phones are phones that run on Microsoft Windows Mobile, the same system that many of us use on our work and home PCs or laptop computers.
Windows mobile phones are part of a new generation of smartphones or PDA phones that allow you not only to access the internet from your mobile phone, but to synchronise your PC, laptop and mobile phone using the Windows Mobile operating system.
Most people will have heard of Microsoft's Windows operating system for PC's and laptops, well Windows mobile phones allow you to run a smaller version of that operating system on your mobile phone.
Windows Mobile is a compact version of the Windows operating system combined with a range of basic applications designed specifically to be run on a mobile device.
There have been several versions of Windows Mobile, with a new version tipped to be released later this year called Windows Phone.
Windows Mobile features
Windows Mobile is used on a whole range of smartphones, and has a range of familiar features which make users feel instantly comfortable with both the system and device.
Today Screen
The 'Today' screen on Windows mobile phones shows the date, time, owner information, appointments, emails that have arrived and tasks that need to be done.
Taskbar
The taskbar shows the current time and the volume that the device is set to.
Office Mobile
Windows mobile phones are generally kitted out with this suite of mobile versions of familiar Microsoft Office applications.
Internet Explorer Mobile
This is a compact version of the standard Microsoft Internet Explorer, designed specifically with mobile devices in mind, with Internet Explorer Mobile, Windows mobile phone users can browse the web in much the same way as they would on a PC or laptop computer running Microsoft Windows using this compact version of the browser.
Windows Media Player Mobile
Much as above, this is a compact version of the standard Microsoft Windows Media Player, and allows Windows mobile phone users to listen to and watch a range of media files using the standard Windows Media Player interface on their mobile phone.
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
This allows mobile phones that are attached to computers to share their internet connection via USB and Bluetooth.
Which phones are Windows mobile phones?
Some of the most popular phones on the market are Windows mobile phones, Windows mobile phones offer a great way to organise everything in your life, whilst using a familiar interface and range of applications.
HTC Touch HD
The HTC Touch HD is one of the most popular Windows mobile phones on the market; it offers users a huge touchscreen, speedy internet access and a five megapixel camera.
Billed as one of the top smartphones available, carrying the HTC Touch HD is like carrying a tiny laptop; you have advanced email functions, a document viewer, and GPS navigation.
