Over the last few years, music fans have been well catered for by the mobile phone industry. Take, for instance, the brilliant Nokia 5800XpressMusic. Then there’s Sony’s amazing range of Walkman phones. But until now the mobile phone music experience has been a largely passive one.

That’s all changed, however, with the launch of the Samsung M7600 BeatDJ. Thanks to the inclusion of a fun application, owners can cut up their favourite songs and segue them into a seamless mix to rival Larry Levan. Or if they're a Hip Hop fan, they can harness the app to create Mixmaster Mike-style scratch symphonies. In a nutshell, it offers interactivity on a scale hitherto unseen on a music phone.

The new mobile phone arrives just after O2 chief executive Ronan Dunne's impassioned plea for mobile phone companies to ensure that new models have eye-catching, genuinely new functions. Only if this policy is pursued, he argues, will cash-strapped consumers part with their hard-earned greenbacks in the midst of a recession.

In the form of the M7600 BeatDJ, Samsung at least has heard Dunne’s call. Now it’s just up to the rest of the industry.
